GERD Trigger Foods

Patients with GERD--which is typically experienced as heartburn or sometimes chest pain--frequently ask if diet changes can help. Here is a list of common food triggers to avoid:

a. Reduce the fat content of every meal.
b. Avoid if possible: *** are most common triggers

1. refined sugar
2. caffeine ***
3. alcohol ***
4. chocolate
5. onions
6. peppermint
7. spearmint
8. tobacco
9. spicy foods ***
10. milk products
11. tomato ***
12. citrus
13. wheat*** (I don't see this published in many journal articles, but anecdotally, many of my patients tell me that eliminating wheat has been helpful; and eating a lot of wheat makes symptoms worse)
